Killing hornets with a blowtorch...#DoingWhatWeDo

And what else do we do?

We wash diapers. Lots and lots of diapers. It's a bit alarming that one tiny human can produce so much liquid waste in a twenty four hour period.

For the inspiration of any potential collage makers out there (Sarah?) and in celebration of our anniversary, I present the "Three Wonderful Years Collage."

As of today, we have a new president--Ashraf Ghani.

Party at the office to celebrate...

Zadok slept through most of it. Incidentally, he is exactly three months old today.

Still photography just doesn't do him justice...

 ...when he really gets going.

Some shots of our house this morning...

 Life...

 Liberty...
 And the pursuit of happiness...

I find it helps one's outlook on life to remember that only the last of those is truly inalienable.

Morning glories were a banned flower in our yard for a long time, because of their tendency to twine among the roses. But when Marian left, the chowkidors took the liberty of planting a big morning glory bush right at the corner of our house...so now we have the roses in memory of Tom and Marian's sojourn here, and we have the less tidy, less elegant, but riotously beautiful morning glories for my personal pleasure. The Goheen Gardens are the Lightner Gardens now.

September 12, 2014

Our first days back in Kabul can be summed up in one word...dust. The house was thick with it--less so now, thankfully, after two days of work. We're all experiencing a little discomfort as we readjust to the dryness and dust. It's the hardest for Zadok, of course, but he has been very brave. Lots of sleep and lots of nursing help.

The first day back I didn't have much milk to give him. Friends recommended I should indulge in this:

It's a bit like a honeydew melon, but sweeter. Lacking an English name, I shall call it the "milk melon."

I think it's 2nd Chapter of Acts that sings, "He has taken me from the dust and to dust I shall return..."
That chorus has been stuck in my head of late.

Well...it's been a while but now I'm back. So keep checking for photos, snippets, and deep wisdom...all reported live from Kabul.
